In 1070 William the Conqueror chose Windsor as a base to guard London from the west. Since then it has been a continuous home to the royal family. Over the years many of the royal residence have made their own mark on the castle and this has made it a spectacular building with many additions and special features.
Windsor Castle is home to a large collection of painting by well know artists such as Holbein, Rubens and Van Dyck. The Castle also has large collections of porcelain, sculpture, armour and tapestries.
The present Queen and her family still use the Castle on many weekends.
