Ashmolean Museum

The Ashmolean Museum is the world's first university museum and was opened in 1683. It housed the collections of Elias Ashmole, which he donated to the museum and included antique coins, books, engravings, geological specimens, and zoological specimens, which he had collected on his travels. The museum moved to a new building in 1935 as the collections and acquisitions had got so extensive more space was required. The now the museum has a number of exhibition including Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Gallery, Chinese Galleries, Indian Gallery, Islamic Gallery, Japanese Gallery and Textiles Gallery. They also have art from artists including Michaelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Turner.
